EV questions, answered
The questions Sri Lankan EV buyers actually ask — answered with real local numbers and linked to the tools that go deeper.
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Sri Lanka?
On CEB's off-peak tariff (22:30–05:30, about 21 LKR/kWh), filling a 60 kWh battery from empty costs roughly LKR 1,260. Charging overnight off-peak is the cheapest way to run an EV. Use our home-charging calculator for your specific car.
How far can an EV really go on a charge here?
Less than the brochure WLTP figure — Sri Lanka's hills and the air-conditioning needed in the heat both cut range. Our range calculator and route planner model terrain and climate to give a realistic figure for your route.
Is an EV cheaper to run than a petrol car?
Yes, substantially, on energy. At off-peak electricity vs petrol at current prices, the cost per km is a fraction of petrol. Our running-cost calculator shows the comparison on live rates.
How long does an EV battery last?
Modern packs are warrantied around 8 years (BYD) and typically retain most capacity well beyond that. LFP chemistry (common here) is especially durable and tolerates regular 100% charging. State of Health is the number to check on a used car.
Can I charge an EV at home?
Usually yes with a wall box; check whether you have single- or three-phase supply (it sets the max AC speed). In an apartment you'll need written permission and a metering arrangement — see our apartment-charging guide.
Is there enough charging infrastructure in Sri Lanka?
The public network is growing — our charging-infrastructure tracker shows live station counts against the ~1,180-by-2030 target, and the route planner routes you against the real network.
Do EVs cope with Sri Lankan heat and monsoon?
Yes. Heat increases AC use (which trims range) and makes battery thermal management and correct tyre pressure more important, but EVs operate fine. Avoid deep flood water as with any car.
Are EVs expensive to maintain?
Generally cheaper to service than petrol cars — no oil changes and long-lived brakes — but budget for tyres, the 12V battery and scheduled coolant. See our maintenance guide.
What does it cost to import an EV?
A stack of levies on the CIF value — customs duty, a per-kilowatt excise, luxury tax above LKR 6M, VAT and SSCL. Rates change by gazette, so verify the current schedule; our import-tax guide explains the structure.
