Registering an EV in Sri Lanka (DMT)

Updated 6/25/2026

Registration is the step that turns your EV into a road-legal, plated vehicle. If you buy from an authorised distributor it's usually handled for you; for an import you do it yourself at the DMT.

If you buy from a distributor

The distributor typically completes first registration and hands you a registered, plated car. Confirm in writing that registration and the Certificate of Registration (CR) are included, and check the CR shows the correct owner, motor power (kW) and battery details — these matter for tax and resale.

If you import the vehicle yourself

  1. Clear Customs and pay the duty stack (see our import-tax guide) — you'll receive the Customs documents needed for registration.
  2. Get the vehicle examined/approved as required, with the import and Customs paperwork.
  3. Submit the first-registration application to the Department of Motor Traffic with the Customs clearance, invoice and identity documents.
  4. Pay the registration fee and collect the Certificate of Registration and number plate.
Keep every Customs and registration document — buyers of a used EV will ask for them, and a clean paper trail protects resale value.

FAQ

Does the dealer register the EV for me?

Usually yes for an authorised-distributor purchase — confirm the CR is included and correct. For a personal import you register at the DMT yourself.

What details should I check on the Certificate of Registration?

Owner name, motor power in kW, and battery/identification details — errors here cause problems at tax time and resale.
